The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Community Service Unit, volunteered selflessly again this year, by providing over 43,500 hours, for the 2010 – 2011 year.  Volunteers in Police Service show Florida has a value of $18.40 per volunteer hour, which equates to over $801,000 in savings for the county.

All of the Community Service Unit programs are invaluable to this agency and our community.  Their loyalty, dedication and hard work affect so many and does not always get the recognition it deserves.

Listed below are volunteers throughout the agency and the number of hours worked in each division.

Working in Crime Scene and Investigations are:  Joan Foster, Phil Weiler, Sally Farace, & Sandy Powell, who contributed 765 hours this year.

Pat Zaborowski, who volunteered in General Services logging in 333 hours.

Records Sharon Napolitano and Mary Beth Maxwell logged in 1,099 hours.

Crime Prevention is utilizing the talents of Mike Molloy, Steve Sackman, Paul Bristol and Phil Walker who contributed about 850 hours.

Over 3,500 volunteer hours were done at the Courthouse: Tom Harvey, Mike LaRouso and Shirley Douglas manned the security at the front door and Clarence Newmon, a volunteer process server, who serves at least 10,000 subpoenas each year.

Jim Aadlund, Nick Coppola, George Douglas, John Makolin, Harvey Niblack, Dennis Rings, Dan Thomas, Dan Walsh, Dave Werner, Mike Wisiewski and Harvey Zavelsky of the Marine Unit have 1,531 hours logged this year.

The Mall Substation is home base for many programs available in our community.

Mall Substation volunteers – Pat Smargiassi, Donna Dobie, Claire Linn, Marie Jeffes, Lucille Lepore, Kathy Martin and Barbara Madell donated 1,071 hours calling on our elderly who have no family nearby.(We Care Program)  They make these calls every day of the week.  Also with our Mall Office is Pat Daum, who handles all of the data entry.

Victim Advocate Volunteers, Nancy Carl, Sue Carter, Shirley Douglas, Dora Esposito, Doris Hanson, Larry Johnson, Mike Kiefer, Althea Powell Chandler, Pam Runkel, Tamara Snycerski, Bobbi Smick, Wayne Tozzolo, and Stephanie White logged in 944  volunteer hours with additional “On Call” hours totaling over  7150 hours.  The Victim Assistance volunteers are fully trained to be first responders and are on an “on call” rotation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist any 911 call as directed by our agency's policy and procedures.

Seniors vs Crime – Spearheaded by Fred Grone who logged 360  hours with Seniors vs Crime –  This program, sponsored by the Attorney General’s Office, actively assists in consumer protection investigations.

Our largest group of volunteers is the Patrol or CAP Unit who contributed almost 33,000 hours with:

*            Over  37,000 house, area and business checks – while it might appear to some that you are just riding around, you are the eyes and ears of law enforcement and there are no statistics on just how many potential crimes are averted because of your presence.

*            Unlocked 4,816 vehicles

*            Did  818  Traffic Enforcements – the first thing you hear on the radio after a Traffic Unit is called is “is there a CAP Unit available”

*            Did 196 DUI Impoundments, the money goes to Law Enforcement in Indian River County.

*            Did 181 School Crossings to fill in for the regular School Crossing guards.

*            Wrote 47 illegal parking tickets and issued 1766 illegal parking and fire lane warnings

*            Did   304  Transports, 840 Details, 277 VIN Verifications and  102 We Care Checks

This frees up the deputy’s time to do other things.

VOLUNTEERED OVER 1,000 HOURS – Pretty AMAZING when you consider a paid employee works 2,080 hours annually
