Accredited Law Enforcement Agency
Law Enforcement AccreditationIn 1989 the Indian River County Sheriff's Office became one of the few law enforcement agencies throughout the country involved in the national accreditation process developed by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

On March 16, 1991, the Sheriff's Office was recognized as having achieved professional excellence through compliance with the nationally accepted standards for law enforcement agencies as developed by the CALEA.

The Sheriff's Office was the 173rd law enforcement agency in the country and the first on Florida's Treasure Coast to achieve this level of professional recognition.

Today, there are approximately 600 agencies throughout the world that are recognized as accredited agencies by CALEA.

The Professional Services Unit is responsible for updating and maintaining the policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office. As an Accredited Agency the Unit is also responsible for documenting compliance with all applicable standards of the CALEA and the Commission on Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.

Benefits of Law Enforcement Accreditation:
  • Stronger defense against lawsuits and citizen complaints.
  • Accredited agencies are better able to defend themselves against lawsuits and citizen complaints. Many agencies report a decline in legal action against them once they become accredited.
  • Greater accountability within the agency.
Accreditation standards give the Sheriff a proven management system of written directives, sound training, clearly defined lines of authority, and routine reports that
    support decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Staunch support from government officials.
Accreditation provides objective evidence of an agency's commitment to excellence in leadership, resource management, and service delivery. Thus government officials are more confident in the agency's ability to operate efficiently and meet community needs.
  • Increased community advocacy.
Accreditation embodies the precepts of community-oriented policing. It creates a forum in which police and citizens work together to prevent and control crime. This partnership helps citizens understand the challenges confronting law enforcement and gives law enforcement clear direction about community expectations.
  • Improved employee moral.
Accreditation is a coveted award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence, and competence. It requires written directives and training to inform employees about policies and practices; facilities and equipment to ensure employees' safety; and processes to safeguard employees' rights. Employees take pride in their agency, knowing it represents the very best in law enforcement.

In addition to being accredited by the CALEA, the Sheriff's Office is also a member of the Florida Police Accreditation Coalition (FLA-PAC).

FLA-PAC is an organization composed of accredited law enforcement agencies, and agencies attempting to obtain either CALEA or the State of Florida accredited status. Members of FLA-PAC meet regularly and review policies, procedures, and conduct training seminars. FLA-PAC provides new ideas to its members through a network of professional law enforcement agencies. FLA-PAC was charted in 1989.

Through the CALEA and the Florida Police Accreditation Coalition, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office is committed to providing the citizen's of Indian River County the highest quality of service and professionalism.
